DEI transcends the diversity of teams. As builders and stewards of technology that impact the world, raising our collective consciousness about how our products either include or exclude pockets of society is imperative. Imagine a world where

  • ZipRecruiter doesn’t notice that women aren’t applying for jobs that have typically male-oriented performance words like rockstar, ninja, guru, killer instinct, battle-tested, hacker in their job descriptions.

  • Fintechs don’t notice that their algorithms are assigning financial risk scores to humans on data, that tends to isolate to a certain zip code or race.

  • SaaS products don’t think about the diversity of their users and impact the ability of all to do great work at work (and spoiler alert: Accessible UX = Good UX = Good Product)

We’re kind of living in that world today, and I think we can do better. Get curious. Think about the impact of the product you manage. How might it grow to be a rising tide for everyone, not just those that are cruising along.
